Homework/In Class Assignments for Mr. Davey's

World History Class

The development of democracy in Western Europe took two distinct paths. Under one model, monarchs gained authority from the lords to become absolute and gradually ceded power to commoners. In the other archetype monarchs gained complete authority over their nations and refused to relinquish their power except by revolution. This next unit will examine the development of England and France from Medieval countries to modern, democratic, nation-states.
We have seen how the English ideal that the people should play a major role in the government influenced the French political philosophers of the Enlightenment. With discontent arising in the Old Regime in France, it would only take a momentous event or spark to set off a revolution in France. The revolution that would take place would change the course of World History and set a new course for the world's future.
Following the French Revolution the Congress of Vienna (1814-1815) would try to restore order and peace to Europe. They tried to control the continent with an iron hand and erase the memory of the recent French Revolution. However, the forces released by the revolution in the end would be too strong for this international agency to control.
